There’s something about pineapple and coconut that instantly tastes like summer.
And while a classic piña colada might make you think of sunshine, holidays and warmer weather, those same tropical flavours work brilliantly in a refreshing smoothie too.
This Piña Colada Protein Smoothie combines pineapple, banana and coconut milk with vanilla protein to create a creamy, tropical smoothie that takes just 5 minutes to prepare and provides 23g of protein per serving.
It’s simple, refreshing and perfect for those warmer days when you want something quick without spending ages preparing food.
But smoothies can vary enormously nutritionally — and throwing fruit into a blender doesn’t automatically make something a balanced meal.
So what should you actually put in a smoothie?
What Makes a Smoothie Balanced?
Smoothies can be a really convenient way to add fruit, protein and other nutrients to your diet.
But what goes into your blender matters.
A smoothie made primarily from fruit and juice can provide carbohydrates and micronutrients, but it may not contain much protein or fat.
That doesn't make fruit smoothies "bad". It simply means that if you're using one as a meal or want something more substantial, it's worth thinking about what else you're adding.
A simple way to build a more balanced smoothie is to think about including:
🍓 Fruit or vegetablesFor flavour, carbohydrates, fibre and micronutrients.
💪 A protein sourceSuch as protein powder, Greek yoghurt, soy milk or another protein-rich ingredient.
🥜 A source of healthy fats, if neededNuts, seeds, nut butter or avocado can make a smoothie more substantial.
🥛 LiquidMilk, plant milk, coconut water or water depending on the recipe and your goals.
You don't necessarily need every one of these in every smoothie. The important thing is considering what role the smoothie is playing in your day.
Why Add Protein to a Smoothie?
Protein plays an important role in maintaining and building muscle and supporting recovery from exercise.
If you're strength training, getting enough protein across the day is particularly important.
Adding protein to a smoothie can also be an incredibly convenient way of increasing your daily intake.
Instead of trying to cram most of your protein into lunch and dinner, spreading protein-containing foods throughout your day can make reaching your target much easier.
This recipe uses vanilla whey protein and provides 23g of protein per serving.
Is Fruit in Smoothies Too High in Sugar?
Fruit naturally contains sugar, but it also provides fibre, vitamins, minerals and beneficial plant compounds.
You don't need to be frightened of putting fruit into your smoothie.
What matters more is looking at your diet as a whole rather than judging individual ingredients in isolation.
This recipe uses both banana and pineapple, which provide the natural sweetness and tropical flavour.
There's no need to add extra sugar to make it taste good.
Fresh or Frozen Fruit – Which Is Better?
Both are absolutely fine.
Fresh pineapple works beautifully in this recipe, but frozen pineapple can be particularly good for smoothies because it creates a colder, thicker texture without needing as much ice.
Frozen fruit is also incredibly convenient.
You can keep bags of fruit in your freezer and always have ingredients available for a quick smoothie without worrying about them going off.
It's one of those little shortcuts that can make eating well easier.

Is a Smoothie a Meal or a Snack?
The answer is: it depends what's in it and what you need from it.
At 182 calories per serving, this particular smoothie is relatively light.
For some people that might work perfectly as a snack or alongside something else.
If you're having it for breakfast and know you'll be hungry again an hour later, you may simply need a more substantial meal.
You could pair it with something to eat or add ingredients such as oats, nut butter or seeds.
The goal is to build meals that support your individual nutrition needs, activity levels and appetite.
Easy Ways to Make Your Smoothie More Filling
If you'd like to turn this into something more substantial, try adding:
Oats for additional carbohydrates and fibre
Chia or flaxseeds
A spoonful of nut butter
Greek yoghurt
Additional fruit
A breakfast alongside your smoothie
Remember that additions will change the nutritional information — and that's completely fine.
You're adapting the recipe to suit your needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use frozen pineapple?
Yes. Frozen pineapple is ideal for smoothies and will give this recipe an even thicker, colder texture.
Can I use canned pineapple?
Yes — the original recipe can be made with either canned or fresh pineapple.
Can I make this smoothie without protein powder?
You can, but removing the whey protein will significantly change the protein content and nutritional information.
If increasing your protein intake is your goal, you'd want to consider replacing it with another suitable protein source.
Can I prepare it the night before?
Smoothies generally taste and feel best freshly blended. For the nicest texture, I'd prepare this one just before drinking.
Luckily, because it only takes around five minutes, there's very little preparation involved.
