Coffee for Breakfast? Make It Protein (+ Vanilla Coffee Protein Smoothie)

Vanilla coffee protein smoothie made with espresso, almond milk, vanilla whey, cinnamon and flaxseeds, with 26g of protein per serving.

For many of us, coffee is non-negotiable in the morning.

Breakfast, on the other hand? That's sometimes a different story.

When you're rushing to get ready, get everyone out of the house or make it to work on time, it's very easy to grab a coffee and tell yourself you'll eat something later.

And occasionally, that's life.

But if your morning coffee regularly becomes your breakfast, you could be missing an easy opportunity to get some nutrition — and importantly, some protein — into the first part of your day.

That's where this Vanilla & Coffee Protein Smoothie comes in.

It combines your morning coffee with vanilla protein, almond milk, cinnamon and flaxseeds to create a cold, creamy drink that provides 26g of protein per serving.

And yes... you still get your coffee. ☕

Coffee Isn't Breakfast – But We Can Work With It

There's nothing wrong with enjoying coffee in the morning.

The issue is simply that a cup of coffee isn't nutritionally the same thing as having breakfast.

If you regularly don't feel hungry first thing, forcing yourself to sit down to a large meal probably isn't going to feel particularly appealing either.

So rather than trying to completely change a habit you enjoy, another approach is to ask:

How can I make this work better for me?

If you're already making coffee, incorporating it into a smoothie can be one simple option.

You still get the flavour and ritual of your morning coffee, but you're adding ingredients that actually contribute something nutritionally too.

It's a good example of something I encourage a lot: work with your existing habits rather than feeling like everything has to change overnight.

Why Add Protein to Your Morning?

Protein plays an important role in maintaining and building muscle, as well as supporting recovery from exercise.

And if you're trying to increase your protein intake, breakfast is often an easy place to start.

You don't need every meal to contain enormous amounts of protein.

Instead, including protein-containing foods at different points throughout your day can make reaching your overall intake much easier.

This smoothie uses vanilla whey protein and provides 26g of protein per serving.

So if you're someone who usually manages coffee but struggles with breakfast, this is one very simple way of getting some protein into your morning routine.

What About Caffeine?

Coffee can absolutely be part of a balanced diet for most people.

Caffeine is a stimulant, which is why many of us enjoy that familiar boost in alertness after our morning coffee.

It's also commonly consumed before exercise.

But more isn't necessarily better.

How caffeine affects you is very individual. Some people can drink coffee later in the day without noticing much difference, while others find it affects their sleep.

And good sleep is pretty important when we're talking about health, recovery and training too.

So there's no need to suddenly start adding extra coffee because you've heard caffeine might help your workout.

This recipe simply gives you another way to enjoy the coffee you may already be having.

The Little Extra: Flaxseeds

There's another ingredient in this smoothie that could easily get overlooked: flaxseeds.

The recipe contains two tablespoons of flaxseeds alongside the espresso, almond milk, whey and cinnamon.

Flaxseeds provide fibre and fats and are an easy ingredient to add to smoothies because they don't require any complicated preparation.

They're a good reminder that small additions can help us add more variety to our diet without completely changing the foods and drinks we already enjoy.

  • Handful of ice

Nutrition Per Serving

174 calories

26g protein

4g carbohydrates

6g fat

Is 174 Calories Enough for Breakfast?

This is where context matters.

At 174 calories, this is a relatively light option despite providing 26g of protein.

For one person, it might work perfectly as something small in the morning.

For someone else, it might not come close to keeping them satisfied until lunch.

And that's okay.

High protein doesn't automatically mean a meal is substantial enough for you.

If you want to use this as your breakfast and find you're hungry soon afterwards, you could have something alongside it or add ingredients to make the smoothie more substantial.

The goal isn't to make breakfast as low-calorie as possible.

It's to find something that works with your appetite, your activity and the rest of your day.

How Could You Make It More Substantial?

If you need more from your breakfast, you don't necessarily need a completely different recipe.

You could try adding:

  • Oats

  • Banana

  • Nut butter

  • Chia seeds

  • Greek yoghurt

  • Additional milk

Or simply enjoy your smoothie alongside something you like to eat for breakfast.

Any additions will change the nutritional values shown for the original recipe, but that's not automatically a negative.

You're simply adapting the recipe to better suit you.

Can You Have This Before a Workout?

Because this recipe contains coffee, it's an obvious question.

Some people enjoy caffeine before exercise because they like how it makes them feel during training.

However, your pre-workout nutrition needs are individual.

This particular smoothie is relatively light and contains only 4g of carbohydrates per serving, so depending on the length and intensity of your workout, you may want additional food or carbohydrates alongside it.

And if you're training later in the day, it's also worth considering whether caffeine later on affects your sleep.

You don't need to perfectly engineer every meal around your workout. Think about how you actually feel and perform.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an espresso machine?

Not necessarily. The recipe calls for 60ml espresso, but if you're adapting it at home you could experiment with another strong coffee that you enjoy.

Just allow hot coffee to cool before blending it with the other ingredients and ice.

Can I make it without coffee?

You could, but at that point it would essentially become a vanilla protein smoothie rather than the Vanilla & Coffee recipe.

If caffeine is the issue, you could experiment with decaffeinated coffee instead.

Can I prepare it the night before?

Smoothies generally have their nicest texture when freshly blended.

Because this one only takes around 10 minutes, I'd make it when you're ready to drink it.

You could, however, prepare your coffee ahead of time and keep it chilled in the fridge.

Can I use a different flavour protein powder?

The original recipe uses vanilla whey, which complements the coffee and cinnamon particularly well.

You can experiment with other flavours, but remember that changing ingredients may alter the flavour and nutritional values.
